Created by the 2010 Attabad landslide, this 21-km lake is an extraordinary vivid turquoise, framed by the red-brown rock walls of the Hunza Gorge. Boat trips on the lake, with the drowned Karakoram Highway visible beneath the water, are a compelling half-day addition to the Hunza section.
Baltit Fort, overlooking Karimabad, is a 600-year-old palace-fortress with layers of Tibetan, Central Asian, and British influence. Altit Fort, further down the valley, is even older. These are two of the finest historic structures in northern Pakistan and essential inclusions in the Hunza section.
The ridge above Duikar village, just above Karimabad, offers one of Pakistan’s finest valley panoramas at sunrise. Six peaks above 7,000 m are visible from a single viewpoint — Rakaposhi, Ultar Sar, Diran, Bublimotin, and others — with the Hunza River silver in the valley 1,500 m below. This is consistently cited as one of the most beautiful sunrise viewpoints in Asia.
The Karakoram Highway between Raikot Bridge and Khunjerab Pass is arguably the most dramatic road journey in the world. The stretch from Chilas through the Indus Gorge to Gilgit and then north to Sost passes through landscapes that vary from desert gorge to alpine meadow to high plateau. Every hour of driving is a different world.
The Passu Cathedral peaks, visible from the KKH near Passu village in upper Hunza, are some of the most visually distinctive rock formations in the Karakoram. Photographed from the famous crumbling Hussaini Suspension Bridge or the riverside below, the jagged gothic spires are among the most-photographed subjects in northern Pakistan.
Depart Islamabad by domestic flight (recommended) or private vehicle north on the KKH. Arrive Gilgit. Overnight at a comfortable Gilgit guesthouse. Evening briefing on the Fairy Meadows approach.
Drive 80 km south from Gilgit to Raikot Bridge (1.5 hours). Transfer to private 4×4 jeeps for the dramatic 14-km mountain track to Tato Village. Guided 3-km forest walk to Fairy Meadows. Arrival at the meadow. First view of Nanga Parbat. Settle in. Sunset alpenglow.

June through September. July–August gives the best Fairy Meadows wildflower conditions and reliable Hunza weather, with Khunjerab Pass open and Attabad Lake at its most vivid. Late May and early June are also good but Fairy Meadows may have some residual snow on the upper trail. September offers autumn colours in both locations and noticeably fewer tourists. October is possible for Hunza (famous for golden autumn leaves) but Fairy Meadows typically closes in October.
The 14-day programme typically allocates 5–6 days for the Fairy Meadows portion (including travel days from Islamabad) and 6–7 days for Hunza (including Khunjerab Pass). The exact split is flexible — we adjust based on your interests and the activities you prioritise. If Base Camp trekking is the primary goal, we add a day there; if Hunza’s high-altitude crossings are the focus, we extend in Karimabad.
Yes. The Khunjerab Pass at 4,693 m is included as a full day excursion from Karimabad via Sost. The drive from Karimabad to the pass and back is approximately 8–9 hours and passes through some of the most dramatic high-altitude terrain in the Karakoram. The pass itself is the world’s highest paved international border crossing, straddling the Pakistan–China frontier. A border passport stamp is available at the crossing.

After descending from Fairy Meadows to Raikot Bridge on the KKH, the drive north to Gilgit takes approximately 1.5 hours. From Gilgit, the drive to Karimabad in Hunza takes 2–2.5 hours on the KKH. The total Fairy Meadows to Hunza journey is approximately 4–5 hours. It is a scenic drive in itself, with the Karakoram Highway following the Hunza River north with the Rakaposhi massif (7,788 m) dominating the east side of the valley.
We recommend the PIA domestic flight Islamabad–Gilgit (approximately 50 minutes, spectacular Himalayan views) for arrival into the region if available and on budget. This saves the 15–16 hour road journey and frees a full day for the destination. The return is by private vehicle on the KKH. If flights are not preferred or available, the full road route is included. We check flight availability at booking and advise.
The standard combined tour includes Fairy Meadows with a guided meadow experience and Beyal Camp walk. The full Nanga Parbat Base Camp trek (3,962 m) can be added as an extension, adding 1–2 days to the programme. Specify at booking if Base Camp is a priority and we build it in.
We use a combination of highly-rated guesthouses and boutique hotels in Karimabad offering views of the Hunza Valley, Rakaposhi, and Ultar Sar peak. The most-requested property is Eagle’s Nest Hotel on the ridge above Duikar, known for its panoramic valley-and-mountain views at dawn. We also use heritage properties near Baltit Fort for travellers wanting the historic old-town atmosphere.
Moderate fitness. The main physical demands are the 3-km forest walk from Tato Village to Fairy Meadows (1.5–2 hours uphill), the optional Base Camp trek (3–4 hours each way), and the Khunjerab Pass drive (no significant walking required). Hunza sightseeing is low-intensity. This is appropriate for travellers in moderate fitness who walk regularly — it is not a hardcore trekking expedition.
