The Fairy Meadows and Skardu Adventure is the most geographically ambitious mountain tour we offer in northern Pakistan. It combines the vertical drama of the Raikot Face of Nanga Parbat (8,126 m) from the Fairy Meadows alpine meadow with the horizontal scale of the Deosai National Park plateau at 4,115 m — two completely different mountain experiences separated by a four-hour drive through the Indus Gorge. In Skardu, the itinerary adds heritage (Shigar Fort and Skardu Fort), desert (Katpana Cold Desert), alpine lakes (Satpara and Shangrila), and the Hushe Valley gateway to the Karakoram core. This is not a tour you do because you want to see Pakistan quickly — it is for those who want to understand the full scope of what the north contains. Everything is private. No other group joins at any point.

Deosai at 4,115 m is an alpine plateau of extraordinary scale — wildflowers extending to the horizon in every direction in July, a wilderness of grassland and lake at an altitude most people will never otherwise reach. It is the habitat of the endangered Himalayan Brown Bear and the venue for some of the most dramatic high-altitude landscape photography in South Asia.

A superbly restored 420-year-old palace-fort in the Shigar Valley, now operating as the Serena Shigar Fort Hotel. The heritage rooms inside the fort are among the most atmospheric places to stay in northern Pakistan. Even without an overnight stay, the fort and its mountain-valley setting make for one of Skardu’s finest visits.
Sand dunes at 2,226 m altitude with snow-capped peaks above 6,000 m as the backdrop. The visual incongruity of desert dunes in the Karakoram makes Katpana one of the most photographed and debated locations in northern Pakistan. It takes 45 minutes to visit and is genuinely extraordinary.
The 3.5–4 hour drive from Gilgit to Skardu follows the Indus River through some of the deepest and most dramatic gorge scenery in the Karakoram. The river is a vivid grey-green in a valley cut between 5,000–6,000 m walls. Geology stops are worthwhile — the Indus Gorge exposes some of the oldest rock on Earth.
A heritage resort on the shores of turquoise Lower Kachura Lake near Skardu. The aircraft-fuselage restaurant and mountain backdrop are iconic; the lake setting is genuinely beautiful. A morning photography visit or lunch stop on the Skardu day programme.
The ancient Kharpocho Fort sits on a rock spur above Skardu town, offering panoramic views of the Skardu Valley, the Indus River, and the surrounding 6,000–7,000 m peaks. The old bazaar of Skardu town — with its distinctive Central Asian and Tibetan cultural influences — is a compelling half-day on its own.
A day-drive from Skardu into the Hushe Valley delivers ground-level views of Masherbrum (7,821 m) and the approach terrain towards the Gondogoro La pass — the trail that links the Hushe Valley to the Baltoro Glacier and K2. The Hushe Valley feels remote and dramatically different from the Skardu valley floor.
Depart Islamabad. Domestic flight to Gilgit recommended (50-minute flight with Himalayan views) or private vehicle on the KKH (9–10 hours). Overnight in Gilgit.
Drive south to Raikot Bridge (1.5 hours). Private 4×4 jeep on the 14-km mountain track to Tato Village. Guided forest walk to Fairy Meadows. First view of Nanga Parbat. Sunset alpenglow Session 1.

Drive east from Gilgit along the Indus River to Skardu (3.5–4 hours). The gorge scenery is outstanding. Arrive Skardu. First views of the Skardu Valley and surrounding peaks. Overnight at Skardu hotel.
Morning visit to Kharpocho Fort above Skardu town. Drive to Shangrila Resort (Lower Kachura Lake) for morning photography and lunch. Afternoon: Satpara Lake and the Satpana area. Return to Skardu.
Full-day excursion to Deosai — the world’s second highest plateau. Drive up from Skardu to the plateau entrance (approximately 1.5 hours). Cross the plateau with stops at Bara Pani Lake, Sheosar Lake, and wildflower meadow viewpoints. Return to Skardu. A day unlike any other on the tour.
Drive to Shigar (30 km) for the Shigar Fort visit. Lunch. Afternoon: Katpana Cold Desert (sand dunes with mountain backdrop, 45 minutes). Return to Skardu. Evening at leisure.
Day drive into the Hushe Valley for views of Masherbrum (7,821 m) and the Karakoram approach terrain. Hushe village — the gateway to Gondogoro La and the Baltoro expedition route. Return to Skardu.
Fly from Skardu to Islamabad (1 hour — recommended; spectacular K2 corridor aerial views from left window) or drive south via the Indus Highway and KKH. Journey ends in Islamabad.
2–3 nights. Best available camp with Nanga Parbat view. Full board.
4–5 nights. Recommended properties include Concordia Motel, Mashabrum Hotel, or similar quality Skardu properties with mountain views.

This 14–16 day private adventure combines two of the most dramatically different mountain environments in Pakistan. At Fairy Meadows, you experience the Nanga Parbat approach, pine forest, alpine meadow at 3,300 m, and optional Base Camp trek. In Skardu, the itinerary covers Shangrila Resort, Satpara Lake, the ancient Skardu Fort, the Deosai National Park plateau (the world’s second highest plateau at 4,115 m), Shigar Fort and Palace, the Katpana Cold Desert, and the Hushe Valley as the gateway towards the Karakoram’s ‘Throne Room of the Gods’ (Gondogoro La route). For the most ambitious groups, a trip to Askole and the start of the K2 Base Camp corridor is also available as an extension.
The most efficient route is: Islamabad → fly or drive to Gilgit → drive south on KKH to Raikot Bridge for Fairy Meadows → return to Gilgit after Fairy Meadows → drive east via the Karakoram Highway and Indus Highway to Skardu (approximately 3.5–4 hours from Gilgit). This avoids any significant backtracking. The Gilgit–Skardu highway follows the Indus River through some of the most dramatic gorge scenery in the Karakoram.
Deosai is a high-altitude plateau at approximately 4,115 m (13,497 ft) — the world’s second highest plateau after the Tibetan Plateau. In summer, it is covered in a vast carpet of wildflowers at a scale that dwarfs even the Fairy Meadows meadow, extending to the horizon in every direction. It is also the primary habitat of the endangered Himalayan Brown Bear and hosts some of the highest-altitude lakes in Pakistan. The drive across Deosai is one of the most extraordinary road journeys in Asia.
Shangrila Resort — also called ‘Heaven on Earth’ locally — is a heritage resort on the shores of Lower Kachura Lake near Skardu. The lake has vivid turquoise water, the resort has a restaurant set in a converted aircraft fuselage, and the surrounding peaks provide a distinctive mountain backdrop. It is a popular photography location and a pleasant half-day stop. We include it as part of the Skardu day programme.
The standard combined tour does not include K2 Base Camp (which requires a minimum 14-day trek from Askole to the camp and back). However, the Hushe Valley extension — a day-drive from Skardu to Hushe village (the starting point for Gondogoro La and Broad Peak approaches) — is available as a day trip and gives a ground-level view of some of the world’s highest peaks without the 14-day commitment. Askole village, the starting point for the full K2 trek, is also accessible as a day excursion from Skardu.
The Katpana Cold Desert, approximately 30 km from Skardu, is the world’s highest cold desert — sand dunes at approximately 2,226 m altitude surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The visual contrast of desert dunes against a backdrop of high mountain rock and permanent snow is startling and distinctly un-desert in feel. It is one of Skardu’s most photographed locations and takes approximately 45 minutes to visit as part of the Skardu day programme.
We allocate a minimum of 4–5 days for Skardu and its satellite sites: at least 1 day for Shangrila, Satpara Lake, and Skardu Fort; 1 full day for Deosai National Park; 1 day for Shigar (Shigar Fort and Palace Hotel); 1 day for the Hushe Valley; and an optional day for Katpana Desert and the Satpana Lake area. The Skardu section is rarely rushed — each site benefits from unhurried time.
Absolutely. Shigar Fort is a 420-year-old stone palace-fort in Shigar village, approximately 30 km from Skardu. It has been superbly restored and converted into the Serena Shigar Fort Hotel — staying overnight here (or dining at the property) is one of the finest heritage experiences in northern Pakistan. The fort overlooks the Shigar River valley with peaks above 7,000 m on both sides. We include Shigar Fort as a key Skardu-section destination on all combined tours.We do not provide artificial lighting equipment. This is a natural-light expedition. However, we have reflectors available on request for portrait or product shots in the field. All our photography sessions are timed around natural light conditions — we track weather forecasts daily and adjust session times based on cloud conditions, wind, and the forecast clarity window.
June–August is the best window. The Deosai wildflower season peaks in July–August (essential for the full plateau experience). Fairy Meadows is at its best in July–August. The Fairy Meadows + Skardu combination therefore has the same optimal season as either destination individually. May is possible for Skardu but Fairy Meadows may still have late-season snow on the approach trail. September is excellent for both locations.
Yes. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) operates flights from Islamabad to Skardu (approximately 1 hour) on most days in season, weather permitting. The Skardu flight delivers some of the finest aerial mountain views available in Asia — the aircraft passes directly alongside the Karakoram wall with K2, Broad Peak, and the Baltoro Glacier visible from the window on the left side. We highly recommend flying into or out of Skardu if the budget allows.
