For most travellers, the best time to visit Skardu is from late May to early October. June to August is best for families and Deosai access, while September and October are better for autumn colours, calmer travel and photography.

Skardu sits at about 2,200 metres, and the places around it climb far higher. Deosai is above 4,000 metres. The month you choose decides the temperature, whether Deosai and Basho are reachable, how reliable the Islamabad flight is, and how busy hotels are.
Summer is the easiest and most complete season. Autumn is the most beautiful and the calmest. Spring brings blossom but cold nights, and winter is only for travellers who accept snow, closures and flight disruption. If your Pakistan stay is short, choose the safer month rather than the prettiest one.
Four very different trips. Pick the one that matches what you want to see.

Deosai National Park is usually reachable from around late June to September. Snow closes the plateau for the rest of the year, and the exact opening date moves with each winter’s snowfall.
Opening depends on snowmelt. We confirm access before your trip.
At over 4,000 metres, nights drop near freezing. Warm layers are essential.
The plateau needs a 4×4 and an experienced driver, arranged by us.
Blossom in spring, golden poplars and clear light in autumn.
Calmer hotels, mild days and the most romantic scenery.
The most dependable flights and roads for limited leave.
A beautiful month can still be the wrong month for your group. These are the cases where we’ll suggest different dates or a different plan.
Sub zero nights, closed hotels and frequent flight cancellations make December to February hard for vulnerable travellers.
Instead: Move to May or September, or choose a lower valley such as Hunza’s Karimabad for a winter break.
March and early April flights are often delayed, and a single cancellation can take a big share of a four day trip.
Instead: Add a buffer day, fly one way and drive the other, or travel from late April.
Before late June and after September, the plateau is usually snowed in.
Instead: Plan Deosai for July or August, or focus on Shigar, Khaplu and the lakes.

We’d rather tell you a month is risky than sell you a trip that goes wrong. If your dates fall in a difficult window, we’ll say so and suggest a safer alternative, whether that’s shifting a week, flying one way, or swapping Deosai for Shigar and Khaplu.
Every Skardu itinerary we plan includes a flight buffer day, and in spring or autumn we check hotel heating before booking. Families visiting from abroad, see our guide to Pakistan tours for overseas Pakistanis.
01
If yes, only late June to September works.
02
Short, fixed trips need the most reliable flight months.
03
Elders and young children need warmer months and easier pacing.
04
October is the most beautiful; July is the easiest.
05
Road trips are more predictable in summer and early autumn.
For most travellers, July and September are the strongest single months. July gives the most reliable weather and Deosai access; September adds clear skies, fewer crowds and the first autumn colour.
June to August is best for families. The weather is stable, roads and Deosai are open, and flights are at their most reliable.
Usually not. Deosai is normally snowed in until late June and starts closing in October, so plan it for July or August.
Only for experienced travellers who accept sub-zero nights, closed hotels and frequent flight disruption. For most people, May to October is a far better choice.
From November to March, and to a lesser extent in early spring, when cloud and snow disrupt flights most often. Summer flights are the most reliable, but we still keep a buffer day.
From late September to October, when the poplars in Shigar and Khaplu turn gold. Mid to October is usually the peak.
May to September gives the most dependable flights and roads for limited leave. Keep a buffer day so a flight delay does not affect your return.
Send us your travel dates, number of travellers, departure city, hotel preference and whether you prefer flight or road. We’ll suggest the best Skardu plan for your group and explain what to include or avoid.
