Deosai is usually open from late June to September and is best visited as a full day jeep trip from Skardu. The plateau sits above 4,000 metres, so it is cold even in summer and needs warm layers. July brings the wildflowers, September brings clear skies and fewer visitors.

Average above 4,000 m, one of the highest plateaus on earth.
Usually late June to September, depending on snowmelt.
4×4 jeep from Skardu via Satpara, about two hours to the plateau.
Mild days, near freezing nights. Weather changes quickly.
Sheosar Lake, Bara Pani stream, wildflower meadows.
Himalayan brown bears, marmots and birds of prey. Keep your distance.
Opening dates change every year. We confirm access before your trip.
We leave Skardu early, climb past Satpara Lake and reach the plateau mid morning. The jeep crosses open grassland to Bara Pani, where streams braid across the meadows, then continues to Sheosar Lake near the far edge of the park.
After a picnic lunch by the lake, we return the same way, reaching Skardu by early evening. It is a long day, but most of it is spent looking out of the window at landscapes you won’t see anywhere else.
| Month | Access | What You'll See |
|---|---|---|
| May to mid June | Usually closed | Snow still covers the plateau |
| Late June | Opening | Snowmelt, streams at their fullest |
| July | Open ★ | Wildflowers at their peak |
| August | Open | Green meadows, busiest month |
| September | Open | Clear skies, golden grass, fewer visitors |
| October onwards | Closing | Early snow can close the road suddenly |
We’ll confirm opening dates and book a jeep with an experienced driver.
Deosai is a high, remote day out. These groups need extra care.
Long jeep hours and cold at 4,000 m can be hard for toddlers.
Instead: Choose Satpara Lake and Shangrila instead, or go only to Bara Pani and back.
Altitude and cold make the day demanding.
Instead: Ask your doctor first, or stay at Skardu-level sights like Shigar.
The road is usually snowed in before late June and after September.
Instead: Visit Manthokha Waterfall or the Katpana desert instead.

About two hours by 4×4 jeep via Satpara to reach the plateau. Sheosar Lake is further across the plains, so plan a full day.
It is not recommended. The track is rough and unpaved, so a local 4×4 jeep with an experienced driver is the safe choice.
Yes for most children, with warm layers and a relaxed pace. For toddlers, the long jeep day at 4,000 m can be hard, so we suggest going only to Bara Pani and back.
Sightings are possible but never guaranteed, and early morning or evening gives the best chance. Always keep your distance and stay near the vehicle.
Yes, in summer, but only with a licensed operator and proper cold weather gear. Nights drop near freezing and brown bears live on the plateau.
